January 31, 2019 - PALM BEACH COUNTY, FLA - Imagine a place where students work alongside scientists and millions of dollars are granted to schools to fund centers that will fill the jobs that are in high demand. That place is now a reality in Palm Beach County thanks to new programs launched by Palm Beach State College, Florida Atlantic University, Keiser University, and West Technical Education Center. The Business Development Board of Palm Beach County (BDB) has collaborated with all academic institutions through a Workforce Analysis Study and identified several new programs that will strengthen the talent pipeline in Palm Beach County.

In December of 2018, Palm Beach State College was awarded over $2 million from the Florida Job Growth Grant Fund to launch a new, advanced Center of Excellence in Engineering Technology at the Belle Glade and Palm Beach Gardens campuses. Students will now have the skills to meet the needs for highly trained, middle-skill workers of industries such as aviation, aerospace, manufacturing, clean tech, and homeland security/defense industries.

The new FAU Max Planck Academy, a partnership between Florida Atlantic University, Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI) and the Germany-based Max Planck Society, will open the laboratories of Max Planck to high school students, allowing them to participate in world-class research and scientific discoveries as part of their curriculum.  “Based on historical educational reform efforts, the FAU Max Planck Academy will be the most consequential shift in the delivery of education in the United States in decades,” said Joel Herbst, Ed.D., superintendent of FAU PK-12 schools and educational programs.

Keiser University’s College of Chiropractic Medicine (KUCCM) received a substantial donation from NCMIC Insurance Company for its new chiropractic training clinic at the West Palm Beach campus, which will assist in equipping two clinical rooms with state-of-the-industry chiropractic treatment and diagnostic equipment. The new KU Spine Care Clinic will be home to the Cox8 Flexion Distraction Compression table, the only one currently used for training in a U.S. university.

Last but not least, a new education option that will be a great asset in the Glades Region is West Technical Education Center’s new Home Health Aide Program designed to prepare adults for employment as home attendants or home health aides. Upon completion, they will be ready to work as a Home Health Aide, have the opportunity to earn the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification and to challenge the Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) exam.

“All of these programs demonstrate the collaboration between our academic institutions and the BDB’s economic development strategy to ensure that Palm Beach County’s workforce has the skill set required by our growing companies,” said Kelly Smallridge, President and CEO of the Business Development Board.

The BDB will host an Academic Leaders Council on February 8 to discuss curriculum alignment between business and academia within the technology industry.  In addition, on February 12 at the Convention Center, the BDB will partner with the School District of Palm Beach County on the Claim Your Future Showcase to show high school students the possible career paths available to them in the county. "This event is a culmination of an entire community of stakeholders coming together and providing information for our future workforce," said Dr. Peter Licata of the Department of Choice and Career Options for the School District of Palm Beach County.

The foundation of a strong economy, is a strong, well-educated workforce.
