JUPITER, Fla. (July 30, 2013) – More than 200 business and community leaders attended the “Neurons & Networking” event on July 24 at the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience (MPFI) in Jupiter. The purpose of the event, hosted by the Life Science and Technology HUB together with the MPFI, was to promote collaboration within the neuroscience community and to highlight the research being done at MPFI, Scripps Florida and Florida Atlantic University (FAU).

“The Palm Beach County landscape has changed dramatically over the past decade,” said Michael Gregson, president and CEO of WaveFront Health Technologies, LLC and the founder of  Life Science and Technology HUB. “We now have world-class research going on right in our own backyard. Now is the time to promote scientific collaboration with the goal to build and sustain a thriving life science community in the state of Florida. The end result will be the creation of new companies with more career opportunities for residents and the state’s college graduates.”

“We appreciate the efforts made by Life Science and Technology HUB to shine a spotlight on our research and collaborative programs,” said Dr. David Fitzpatrick, MPFI’s scientific director and CEO. “Together we are working to change lives for the better.”

Dr. Fitzpatrick was joined by Dr. Ron Davis, Professor and Chair, Department of Neuroscience at Scripps Florida, and Dr. Rod Murphey, Professor and Chair, Department of Biological Sciences at FAU, who are also leading this collaborative effort.

Following the reception, guests enjoyed scientific presentations on the ongoing neuroscience research at the three institutions, highlighted by Dr. Ryohei Yasuda, scientific director at MPFI; Dr. Damon Page, assistant professor in the Department of Neuroscience at Scripps Florida; and Dr. Ken Dawson-Scully from the Department of Biological Sciences at FAU. Each focused on their work in brain science and how the three organizations share research findings and educational opportunities. For example, MPFI and FAU have a joint graduate program called the Integrative Biology and Neuroscience program. Students do rotations in various Max Planck labs in combination with academic coursework, which allows for exceptional training in both practical and theoretical neuroscience. For high school-level students, Scripps and MPFI teamed up earlier this year to host “Neuroscience Saturday,” an all-day learning experience for Title 1 schools in Palm Beach County.

Guests at the Neurons & Networking event included Rep. MaryLynn Magar; Palm Beach County Commissioner Hal Valeche; Jupiter Mayor Karen Golonka; Palm Beach Gardens Mayor Bert Premuroso; Daniel Martell, president of the Economic Council of Palm Beach County; and Ximena Pauvif-Machado, Trade Commissioner at the Consulate General of Canada.

The event was generously sponsored by the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County; C3 Cloud; Daszkal Bolton LLP; Economic Council of Palm Beach County; Florida Institute Commercialization of Public Research; FPL FiberNet; Jupiter Medical Center; Kaufman Rossin & Co.; MRSA – UV; Roetzel; South Florida Technology Alliance (SFTA); Triumvirate Environmental; and VWR.
