Palm Beach County’s economic vitality is strengthened due to public/private partnerships and collaborative efforts with businesses, educators, chambers of commerce, government and many other entities. It is through these combined efforts that we are able to bring fresh ideas and implement new initiatives that support the fabric of our success.
The following recent collaborative efforts throughout the county exemplify Palm Beach County’s vibrant community as a great place to live, work and raise a family.
FAU and Sancilio & Company, Inc. Join Forces to Train Drug Development Workforce
Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (CMBB) established the University’s first-of-its-kind university/industry partnership with Sancilio & Company, Inc. to train highly skilled workers in biopharmaceuticals and drug development. Scientists from Riviera Beach based Sancilio & Company, Inc., a local biotech company founded in 2005, have begun teaching a graduate level course on FAU’s Jupiter campus titled, “Drug Development and Regulation,” to help meet their unique workforce needs. With 28 current job openings, the company typically has to search outside the state to fill these positions. Students who participate in the course attend lectures by Sancilio & Company scientists and also receive hands-on laboratory experience learning how to prepare and analyze pharmaceutical solutions. Jupiter Life Science Initiative
The goals of the FAU Jupiter Life Science Initiative are to enhance education and foster research in the life sciences while building partnerships with local research institutes, including the Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience and The Scripps Research Institute, both located on FAU’s John D. MacArthur Campus. The initiative is a joint effort between the Charles E. Schmidt College of Science and the Harriet L. Wilkes Honors College, fostering research in the areas of neuroscience and biotechnology in collaboration with our local partners. Learn more about this initiative >
Palm Beach County Life Science Action Plan / Life Science Advisory Council
The Palm Beach County Life Science Industry Action Plan enumerates the seven major recommendations that came out of the Palm Beach County Life Science Industry Study and details the short and long-term action items that will be used to carry out those recommendations over multiple years. Stakeholders throughout the county from life sciences companies, academic institutions, governments, and support organizations contributed valuable information that was used to build the recommendations and the Action Plan. The Life Science Advisory Council requires the collaborative effort of academia, industry, the investment community and government to continue or expand Palm Beach County’s successful existing programs; borrow and refine effective tactics used by other states and communities; recognize the value of collaboration across multiple and competing interests; and serve the long-term vision of a vibrant, competitive and sustainable Palm Beach County life science industry. Palm Beach Atlantic University Formation of Titus Franchising Center
Palm Beach Atlantic’s president, William M. B. Fleming, Jr., announced the $1.5 million commitment from Ray Titus, CEO of United Franchise Group to establish the Titus Franchising Center at the University. Beginning in fall 2017, the Center will offer academic coursework in the Rinker School of Business to cover all aspects of franchising, an internship program and opportunities for job shadowing and training at United Franchise Group (UFG) global headquarters located on Vista Parkway in West Palm Beach.

Academic Leaders Council
In an unprecedented partnership between industry and education, the BDB created the Academic Leaders Council, a sweeping new initiative that joins businesses and schools to ensure curriculum alignment with jobs and creates a skilled workforce for the many companies relocating or growing in Palm Beach County. Coming together for the first time, event participants included presidents of six Palm Beach County universities, the Palm Beach County School District Superintendent, and officers of 17 Palm Beach County companies in the life sciences, aviation, aerospace, engineering, IT/communications and trades/manufacturing industries.

Business Appreciation Bus Tour
The BDB hosted three Business Appreciation Bus Tours designed to acknowledge local businesses for their contribution to economic development success in the county. Tour participants recently visited companies in North, Central and South Palm Beach County. To date, this new initiative has connected BDB members and city and county leaders with 28 businesses throughout the county. A tour of Western Palm Beach County businesses will take place on November 7.
BDB and Education Foundation Partnership
The Education Foundation of Palm Beach County and the BDB joined forces to host the past two education events recognizing contributions to academia in Palm Beach County. The contributions include excellence in volunteerism, administration, community partnership and alumni achievement in Palm Beach County, Florida’s top-performing urban school district. The event has acquired over 700 attendees and will continue to grow in 2017.
Claim Your Future Showcase
The BDB, in cooperation with the School District of Palm Beach County, created the Claim Your Future Showcase that connects prospective employers with high school students. Over 500 students learned from local companies about career paths and the opportunities available to them as the county continues to expand its workforce. Students were exposed to 40 company exhibitor booths and 32 panel discussions about careers within growing sectors like life sciences, aerospace, aviation, engineering and financial services. Economic Development Forum
The BDB’s annual Economic Development Forum brings together over 300 stakeholders representing state, county, and city entities; economic development organizations; universities, public, and private schools; workforce and transportation agencies; utilities; chambers of commerce; and businesses from many sectors including advertising/public relations/marketing, agriculture, architecture, aviation/aerospace/engineering, banking/finance/accounting, bioscience/life science/medical, communications, consulting/business services, construction, hospitality, insurance/risk management, law, manufacturing, marine, non-profits, publishing, real estate/property management, security, and staffing. Together, they explore cutting edge economic development ideas and issues that affect Palm Beach County now and for the future.
The success of this economic development organization is based largely on the business community engaging in task forces that create resources and programs to enhance the competitiveness of Palm Beach County.
