Site location experts from Georgia, Ohio, Indiana, Texas, Illinois, and South Carolina plus a representative from BDB's state partner, Enterprise Florida, participated in the BDB’s 2018 Palm Beach County Site Consultant Familiarization Program (FAM) on March 7-9.

Participants included:

The tour began on March 7 with an opening reception and dinner at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach with an education/workforce panel. The panel, moderated by Harvey Oyer, Partner of Shutts & Bowen, included:

  • Dr. Robert Avossa, Superintendent, School District of Palm Beach County

  • Dr. John Kelly, President, Florida Atlantic University

  • Vicki Pugh, Vice President of Development, Palm Beach Atlantic University

  • Wendy Sartory Link, Trustee, Palm Beach State College


On March 8, the consultants enjoyed a panel discussion on Public Sector Engagement in Economic Development during breakfast at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach. The panel, moderated by Brian Seymour, Shareholder, Gunster & Co-chair Real Property Practice, included:

  • Mayor Anne Gerwig, Mayor, Village of Wellington

  • Mayor Maria Marino, Mayor, City of Palm Beach Gardens

  • Verdenia Baker, Administrator, Palm Beach County


After breakfast, participants toured Lockheed Martin and Max Planck Florida Institute for Neuroscience, followed by lunch at Wyndham Grand Hotel/Harbourside Place Jupiter with a panel presentation on Aviation/Aerospace/Engineering & Life Sciences industries. The panel, moderated by Richard Rendina, Chairman & CEO, Rendina Real Estate, included:

  • Doug Bingham, Esq., Executive Vice President, Florida Operations & General Counsel, The Scripps Research Institute

  • Kerry Byrne, Vice President, Engineering Operations, Belcan Corporation

  • Jim Maus, Executive Director, Affordability, Aerojet Rocketdyne

  • Robert Mino, Vice President, Life Sciences, Business Development Board of Palm Beach County

After lunch, they headed to Boca Raton and received a narrative on Lake Worth, Boynton Beach and Delray Beach. They toured Modernizing Medicine, Florida Atlantic University  & Research Park at FAU, Boca Raton Innovation Campus, ADT and Office Depot. Next, they headed back to the West Palm Beach area driving by Mar A Lago followed by a driving tour of Flagler Financial District, West Palm Beach Downtown, and Brightline.


Participants ended the day with dinner at the Hilton West Palm Beach with a panel of area business leaders. The panel, moderated by Taryn Goldstein, Managing Director, Tax, BDO, included:

  • Lauren Spector, Co-owner, Quantachrome Corporation
  • Ray Titus, President, United Franchising Group
  • Erik C. Wytenus, Investment Team Lead, J.P. Morgan Private Bank


The FAM program concluded with a BDB Upper Level member breakfast on March 9 at the Colony Hotel sponsored by Discover the Palm Beaches. A site consultant panel, moderated by Corey Saban, Principal, CS Media Works /CO-Founder, TheLaw.TV, LLC, included:

Site consultants provide candid feedback pertaining to Palm Beach County’s business climate.  This important feedback provides the BDB with insight and ideas to further strengthen its business expansion and relocation efforts.
